This website and its contents are in commemoration of Patrick Tierney and Seán O’Carroll who in November 1920 were taken from their homes and shot by British forces.
Patrick Tierney & Sean O’ Carroll
Since the mid 1950’s, on the last Sunday in November, a commemoration is held. This is a non-political event which gathers at the memorial statue to commemorate Patrick Tierney and Seán O’Carroll.
25 year old O’Carroll was taken out of his lodgings in Castle Street and brought around the corner where he was brutally shot. Minutes later the 26 year old Patrick Tierney was taken out of his parent’s house in Tisdale Street and was killed in an even more brutal manner.
The killings of Tierney and O’Carroll on 30 November 1920 were not isolated events. As I point out in the new book, a campaign of assassination had become the dominant tactic in the War of Independence used by both sides– in November 1920 alone, Crown forces carried out about thirty similar killings, the IRA carried out about twenty-six - these figures exclude those who died on Bloody Sunday (21st November) or in the Kilmichael ambush (28th November).
Terrible as these killings were, which have dominated the narrative for a century, there is much more to
understand about Ardee and its environs in that era.
You can pick up a copy of the book at various locations around Ardee including Peter Callaghans Butchers and The Bliss Tearooms.
People from all over Ireland and indeed beyond these shores have been gracious enough to provide the following photographs and documents for our online Historical Archive.
On the 20th of September 2021, Mairead Mc Guinness MEP will launch the new book by local author Donal Hall in Muldoon's of Ardee.
For our friends unable to attend the launch we have provided a video recording of the ceremony for your viewing.
